CAHA'S KOHL'S CARES FOR KIDS PROGRAM
by posted 05/12/2012

CAHA is pleased to provide another fundraising opportunity to all CAHA families for the upcoming 2012-13 hockey season and beyond.  CAHA has applied and received approval to participate in the Kohl’s Cares for Kids Program.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Kohl’s Fundraising Card Program is a simple, effective way to raise money.  Plus, friends, relatives and neighbors appreciate it too, since they’re already shopping at Kohl’s!  CAHA will stock a supply of Kohl’s Gift Cards in denominations of $10, $25, $50 and $100. Cards are sold to you at face value and then CAHA will apply approximately 5% of your purchase to your skater’s account based on the schedule outlined below.  The exact percentage will be 5% minus any postage charged CAHA by Kohl’s for shipping the cards to us.

CAHA will place an order on the first of the month based on your requests.  All you need to do is complete the “Kohl’s Gift Card Request” form (Click Here and save document to your computer).  Once completed, save and submit to Melanie Luft at .  When we receive the cards, we will notify you via email that your order has arrived and you will need to pick up your cards at the CAHA office.  We cannot mail gift cards as they are the same as cash.  We will ask team managers to coordinate this as teams are formed but this will be optional for them.

NOTE:  You can use the gift cards to pay your Kohl’s credit card statement if you pay at a store location.

We hope that all CAHA families will participate to help offset their hockey costs.  If you have any questions, please email Melanie Luft at or call 513-777-1700.

CAHA 2012-2013 HIGH SCHOOL CLUB HOCKEY PROGRAM
by posted 04/23/2012

CAHA 2012-2013 HIGH SCHOOL CLUB HOCKEY PROGRAM

HIGH SCHOOL - CAHA will carry its commitment to skill development into our High School league as well. Each CAHA High School team will be given an EXTRA every-other-week 60 minute Monday practice in addition to their normally scheduled weekly practice in 2012-2013.  The Ohio High School Club Hockey State Championships will be held in Cincinnati next year, so we are excited to help our local teams better compete for the state crown. The last time the state championships were held in Cincinnati (2010), one of our CAHA league teams (Lakota East) brought home the state championship!  Despite this extra practice, we only expect skater fees for CAHA teams to increase by $25 next season.

CAHA’s Board of Trustees is very excited to announce the following CAHA Head Coaches are approved for the upcoming 2012-2013 season:

Mason (Seth Knudsen) – Seth is the returning head coach for Mason and coached Midget U16 Pre/Post team last season.

Lakota West (Scott Scheider) – Scott coached for a number of years at Moeller HS Hockey (JV team Head Coach) and more recently coached our Midget U18 Pre/Post team last season for CAHA.

LaSalle (Ken Handley) – Ken is the returning head coach and has been approved by the AD along with Kyle Robinson who has been the assistant coach for many seasons.

Lakota East (Joe DiGiorgio) – Joe has coaches for many years for CAHA at the Midget level, most recently as the head coach of the Midget U18 travel team last season.

Fairfield (John Barger) – John has been an assistant coach now for a number of years at Fairfield and will be stepping up to be the head coach next season.

Team Eagles (Rick Riccetti) – Rick is the returning head coach from last season.  Jim Flannery, past head coach will be returning to be an assistant coach on this team too.

Additional changes on Team Formation:

Changes will also be made to the CHSHL handbook to allow players who live within the school district boundaries of the named CAHA teams above but attend another school (ex: home schooled, vocational, or private) the opportunity to be evaluated for the team/school where they live, this is consist with other Club High School leagues within the State of Ohio.   There are a couple teams from above that can’t accept this change and CAHA supports them with their decisions.  Since Mason HS is an official club team recognized by the school they can’t accept any players that do not attend Mason HS.  LaSalle is the other team that can’t accept any players that do not attend LaSalle HS.

Depending on the number of Midget/HS players that sign up for the upcoming 2012-2013 there may be the opportunity to form a Midget JV team that would look to play other teams in the area that are formed as JV teams.   There were a number of these teams in the area last season so the opportunity exists to play a home and home series with these teams next season.

If you have any questions about the High School program please contact Kirk Montgomery, CHSHL Commissioner at 513-476-9951 (cell) or email at .

CAHA RECOGNIZES OUTSTANDING SERVICE
by posted 04/16/2012

CAHA would like to acknowledge and thank all our volunteers and families for the time and energy they dedicated this past year in helping CAHA deliver quality programs for all our skaters. We simply could not offer the programs, tournaments, clinics and other special events we offer without the volunteer efforts of everyone involved. While it is difficult to single out individual contributions, CAHA would like to recognize a few individuals who have gone “above and beyond” in their volunteer efforts with the organization this past year.

  • Seth Knudsen has been named House Coach of the Year for his efforts and contributions as both a coach within the Pre-Post program and a coach of the Mason High School club team. Skaters, parents and all of us within CAHA applaud Seth for his dedication to youth hockey here in Cincinnati.
  • Jerry O’Grady has been named Travel Coach of the Year for his efforts and contributions with the Bantam 97 team. Jerry epitomizes the traits we all want in a successful hockey coach and CAHA salutes Jerry for his tireless efforts over the last 5 years in making our 97 team a great representative of our organization both on and off the ice.
  • Cecil Duncan has been awarded the CAHA President’s Award for his efforts in developing our popular and successful mite ADM program. Our ADM program is helping CAHA endear new skaters to the game of hockey as well as teaching them the foundational skills that will make them very successful future players. You only have to see the smile on these young skaters’ faces as they leave the ice to appreciate the success of this program.
  • Kirk Montgomery has been awarded the CAHA President’s Award for his tireless efforts in organizing and managing the Buckeye and Silver Stick tournaments we hosted last year. We all owe Kirk a debt of gratitude as it is largely through his efforts and organizational skills that CAHA is able to successfully host these events here in Cincinnati. Without someone as experienced and dedicated as Kirk to spearhead these events, many of these tournaments might otherwise be held in other cities, requiring CAHA families to travel outside Cincinnati to participate in these events.

Please join me in thanking all of our volunteers and in thanking Seth, Jerry, Cecil and Kirk for all they have done for CAHA and youth hockey. Great job!

CAHA CONCUSSION AND BASELINE TESTING
by posted 03/01/2012

All CAHA Families:

CAHA is very committed to making ice hockey not only an enjoyable sport but a safe one as well. We have all read about the growing body of knowledge on the short and long term impacts of concussions and the continuing efforts of everyone associated with our sport to ensure we properly diagnose and treat any player who may have sufferred from a concussion. CAHA has taken several proactive steps to assist our coaches in recognizing the symptoms, responding appropriately and insisting on medical clearance before allowing players to retake the ice. In an effort to do even more to protect our skaters, CAHA is very pleased to announce that we have now joined forces with the University of Cincinnati Sports Medicine Program to offer free on-line ImPACT Concussion Testing to all registered CAHA skaters. UC's newly instituted Sports Concussion Program is a recognized expert in concussions and sports related injuries and has developed a comprehensive program of initial baseline testing combined with subsequent medical evaluation services. Once a baseline test has been conducted, this program will be uniquely positioned to compare subsequent ImPACT test results against a CAHA skater's baseline test results to more accurately evaluate the impact of the injury and to recommend when a skater should return to the ice. Without a baseline test to compare to, it is very difficult for any medical provider to fully assess the impact of these types of injuries.

Our voluntary program is compromised of the following key elements:

> all skaters are STRONGLY encouraged to take the free on-line baseline ImPACT test
> the skater's test results will be stored electronically and password protected
> if a skater is suspected to have incurred a head injury, the family can then call a special 800 number for a free triage where it will be determined if the skater should go to an emergency room or be scheduled for a medical evaluation with a UC Sports Medicine physician
> If scheduled for an appointment with a UC Sports Medicine physician, UC will conduct a medical evaluation which could include taking a repeat ImPACT test to compare with the baseline results already stored. The cost for this visit would be similar to most other doctor visits.

All costs associated with this baseline testing program will be absorbed by CAHA and UC Sports Medicine. Please help us take every step possible to protect our skaters and to ensure they have access to the best care possible in the event an injury does occur. A letter announcing the program as well as an instruction sheet outlining the details of the program are attached to this email and will also be posted on the CAHA website.

CAHA is very grateful to Peter Iacobell for helping spearhead this program and this partnership with CAHA. The goal of both parties is to become a proactive leader in this area and to demonstrate the value of this type of proactive program to other hockey organizations across the country.
